The Center of Korea
As the old Korean saying goes, "People should go to Seoul, and horses should go to Jeju." And, it seems, the people have listened. With more than10 million residents, South Korea's capital city is filled with all the rush and excitement that one would expect from a city of its size. Seoul is the center of many important fields in Korea, including education, arts, business and entertainment.
Seoul's neighborhoods each have distinct characters of their own, and are filled with dining, shopping and entertainment options. Areas like Gangnam and Itaewon are well-known to the foreign community, with many western brands available and a diverse selection of restaurants. Sophisticated Apgujeong and Sinsa have streets lined with cafe's and boutiques, perfect for a leisurely weekend. Many areas offer good hiking spots, including Bukhansan National Park in the north and Inwangsan in the northwest. University areas, like the streets and alleys in front of Hongik University and Hyehwa's Daehang-no Street offer up popular entertainment options, many centered on the performing and visual arts.
Surrounding the city of Seoul is Gyeonggi Province, which houses attractive cities like Ilsan, Gwacheon, Bundang, Bucheon and Incheon. All these locations are conveniently connected to Seoul by subway, and most are accessible within an hour.
A City that Really Never Sleeps
Seoul has numerous nighttime entertainment options to keep its residents busy. Young people dance until dawn, club-hopping around Hongik University and Gangnam. Overnight shopping in Dongdaemun is a true Seoul experience, as customers fill their bags with bargains and their stomachs with street food. And soon you'll experience the joys of karaoke (called noraebang here), in a private room with a group of singing friends.
Areas Rooted in Tradition
Many traditional attractions are located throughout Seoul, including a number of palaces and temples. Many of these historical and cultural treasures host festivals throughout the year for visitors and locals alike. Witness the changing of the guard in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace or see a reenactment of the wedding of Emperor Gojong and Empress Myongseong at Unhyeongung Palace. These events are a great way to explore a new part of the city while gaining a deeper understanding of your new home.
Insa-dong is another essential spot for culture-seekers, famous for its precious and traditional goods on display. Wandering Insa-dong's main street and numerous alleys, visitors are greeted with dozens of restaurants serving Korea's traditional cuisine, old-fashioned teahouses and quaint cafes. Insa-don's shops are very popular amongst all age groups, with each store filled with unique items. But it's the galleries that are the real heartbeat of Insa-dong. With approximately 100 galleries in the area, visitors can see many examples of Korean traditional and modern fine arts, from paintings to sculptures.
Streets of Delicious Treats
Whether wandering the avenues during a day of shopping, or hitting up the town's nightlife, don't miss out on the wide variety of street food Korea has to offer. Snacks like spicy tteokbokki, warm odeng, sweet and chewy hotteok, and popular gimbap are quick to gain fans from Seoul's foreign community.
