Sogang Language Program, Since 1994
Educational Aims
SLP provides children with a learning environment in which they can acquire English through experience, SLP's curriculum is on the
concept that language is best learnt through interesting and motivating experiences. SLP encourages children to express their ideas and experiences in natural settings through a systematically developed curriculum. SLP develops students' language abilities by teaching topics related to children's real lives; we do not force students to learn by rote memorization of English grammar or a sentence structure unrelated to their experience.
Background of SLP
The Institute of Foreign Language Education of Sogang University developed a children's English educational program (Sogang Language Program (SLP) to lead Korean children's English education sin the right direction. It is based on Sogang University's experience in teaching English to adult learners. SLP was the first program developed by the institute of a university in Korea. The objectives of SLP are:
Realization of the Future Image of the University
The more that a nation's society, economy, and culture develop, the deeper the relationship between the university and the society becomes. This requires universities to expand their role of studying and bringing higher education to society. Through SLP, Sogang University aims to promote the future image of the university by ensuring and keeping a positive relationship with society.
Researching New Directions in English Education
Sogang University has a long and distinguished tradition of foreign language learning research. This is used to supplement the practical skills of our English educators in the areas of classroom techniques, teaching methodology etc. The end result is a well informed, modern, and effective language program.
The Educational Functions-English Teacher's Training
Although our English educators are well qualified to teach, many have not had a lot of experience in teaching a foreign language in a private "institution" environment. Teacher training at SLP helps new teachers learn from experienced "master" teachers, and help them adapt to the SLP environment.
Pursuing the above educational objectives, SLP Headquarters of Sogang University Corporation opened local SLP institutes. Improvement in the quality of English education cannot be achieved in a single day. It will come through long-term research in education and through a sustained effort to improve the educational environment. SLP will continue to deliver an excellent language program by combining academic educational research and practical teacher training.
Teaching Methodology
Balanced Approach
SLP integrates all the language areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing to enhance the child's overall language ability.
Meaningful Communication Between Teachers and Students
SLP respects students' spontaneity and teachers' creativity. SLP enhances student's English proficiency through meaningful communication and ensuring close relationships between teachers and students.
Practical Implementation of Language Theories and Teaching Methodology
No particular teaching methodology or single language theory contains all the answers in designing the curriculum for SLP. SLP interweaves the best educational theories by adapting them to the real learning needs of the students. Dogmatic adherence to any theory is avoided.
Educational Environment
Qualified Teachers
Certainly, the most important factor in language education is the quality of the teacher. SLP teachers are willing to evaluate their teaching by themselves. They are also willing to be
advised by their peers. SLP teachers never stop looking for effective teaching methods and materials.
High-Quality Educational Materials
SLP schools use a variety of supplementary materials such as posters, flash cards, games, activity tools, and the like. These help teachers prepare lessons that encourage student participation.
Regular Meeting with Parents and Class Observation
It is not easy to perceive the improvement of language education over a short period. Moreover, it is not easy for parents to assess their children's English speaking fluency because most Korean parents are used to assessing their children's abilities by seeing their records or scores. They expect that they can evaluate language skills in the same way. Language study, however, can take a long time to reveal its results and parents need to wait patiently to see them. Considering this fact, SLP schools invite parents to see classes and actively get involved in their children's education. In addition, SLP schools encourage parents to participate in regular meetings and class observation.
